How to Spring Clean Your Relationship

by Online Dating on March 15, 2011

Just like the flowers in a garden, a healthy relationship requires regular upkeep. Just like your house, a healthy relationship requires a good cleaning every spring! Spring cleaning your relationship shouldn’t serve as a disposal, but rather a renewal and preservation of all things positive. Here are 5 ways to effectively spring clean your relationship.

Take stock of what you have

Since it’s springtime, it’s the perfect time to take stock of your relationship, and assess the mess, so to say. Ask yourself a few questions:

  • What creates the messes in your relationship?
  • Are there any wounds that need to be taken care of before you move on?
  • What bad habits do you both have that create rocky situations?
  • Are you — and your partner — committed to maintaining the relationship?
  • What can you do to help the relationship blossom?

Air out the sheets

Just like your bed sheets, you need to air out the sheets in your relationship. If there are old wounds and emotional baggage, get it out there. Sleeping these things under the carpet doesn’t fix a relationship, but only allows issues to fester and eventually blow up. If you feel like you need outside help to clear out your baggage, don’t hesitate to reach out to a counselor.

Take out the trash

Be honest with one another. After you air out the sheets and take out the emotional baggage, talk to your significant other on a regular basis about things that bother you. Don’t be a nag, but talk to your partner to make him/her understand what you need to be happy. And ask your partner what they need, too!

Fresh coat of paint

Once all that stuff is out of the way — once you’ve gotten everything out there, you can start anew. Don’t pick at the flaws in your relationship, but protect it with a fresh coat of paint and polish. Show your partner that you care. Sincere praise and affection goes a long way. Especially after this huge relationship cleansing, make sure he/she knows that you’re committed!

Build something new

Spring is the time of growth and renewal, after all! Build up what you have with your partner, and solidify your foundation by finding new ways to reconnect — try out a new activity or revisit old memories to keep things alive.
