Keys to Successful Online Dating

When you talk about “success” in regard to online dating, you might be talking about different things to different people. For some, it might mean finding a soul mate. For others, it might be finding someone you just enjoy spending time with. For still others, it might be all about sex. Regardless of what your aim is and what you want to get out of online dating, there are some things you can do to increase your chances of meeting those goals.

Here are some of the most important keys to successful online dating:

  • Know what you want. We’re not talking about hair color or body type here. We’re talking about knowing what you want out of online dating. If you’re going to be successful, you have to first define “success.” Figure out what it is you want (or that you think you want) and how you’ll know when you’ve got it.
  • Know who’s compatible. Now, much has been made of the “science” of online dating. The fact of the matter is that no one else can really tell you who you’re compatible with. They can look at averages, but at the end of the day it’s all about you. Think about the characteristics you most hope for in a partner, and start building your list. Start by identifying the personality types that you most enjoy and least enjoy, and go from there.
  • Be honest. Most men tend to add an inch or two to their height, and most women tend to drop five to 10 pounds from their profile. These things are harmless enough. Rather, you need to be upfront with people when you’re online dating about who you are, about what you’re hoping to find and what your situation is.
  • Keep it simple. If a conversation with someone feels like work, you don’t want to consider them as a partner. You want to find someone you’re comfortable with, and who isn’t too much work. Keep it simple, and keep it fun.
  • Establish boundaries. Along with knowing what you want, you need to make some decisions about how much of yourself you’re willing to share. This includes sex, of course, but it also includes things like figuring out when you’ll introduce a date to your children, or whether you’ll talk about taboo subjects like politics or religion with a date.
