What To Cook: Easy Date Night Recipe Ideas

by Kristin Marshall on July 12, 2011

Online Dating Infographics

When it comes to the first date or the fortieth date, it’s hard to beat a chill, romantic night in with a home cooked meal. But what to cook? It can sometimes be intimidating, especially if you have a picky partner, but here are a few tasty, simple recipes for your date night meal.

Entrees

Spaghetti Carbonara

TOTAL COOK TIME: 30 minutes; yield 6 servings

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary
  • 2 red jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup cognac or brandy (optional)
  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese, plus more for garnish
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated pecorino romano cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • salt and ground pepper
  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Combine the olive oil, bacon, jalapenos, garlic, rosemary, and 1/4 cup water in a large skillet.
  3. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the water evaporates and the bacon crisps — about 12 minutes. Discard the garlic afterward.
  4. Add the cognac, if desired, and cook until it evaporates.
  5. Remove mixture from the heat and set aside 1/4 cup for garnish.
  6. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in the boiling water according to the label.
  7. Mix the eggs, cheeses, parsley and 1 teaspoon pepper in a bowl.
  8. Drain the pasta, reserving 1/4 cup cooking water.
  9. Return the skillet to medium-high heat. Add the pasta and toss until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  10. Whisk the reserved pasta water into the egg mixture, then quickly pour over the pasta in the skillet and toss to gently cook the eggs and make a creamy sauce.
  11. Garnish with the reserved bacon mixture and more parmesan.

Summer Date Ideas It’s hard not to get outdoors during the summer. It’s hard to not get out with that guy or gal you’ve been eyeing, so jump right in and take advantage of the warmer weather and summer activities. Here are more than 10 fun summer date ideas for inspiration.

Garage Sale-ing

Summer’s weather creates the perfect situation for some outdoor shopping. Many people have garage sales every weekend, so hit some of those up with your sweetie. Many neighborhoods will get in on it together, so you’ll have plenty garage sales to hop around to.

Two other options, depending on where you live, include antiquing and heading to a flea market. You’ll have to do some research to find these near you.

Get Wet

So, there are tons of options out there if you have any kind of water source nearby — beach, lake, ocean, river, pool, etc. Relax in the pool, or spend a romantic evening in the hot tub. If you don’t have a boat, you could rent a sailboat or canoe for the day for a fun day on the water. Other wet activities include wakeboarding, surfing, swimming, and tubing.

Watch It Outdoors

Drive-in movies are way more fun than the traditional moviegoing experience. See if there are any drive-in movie events in your area and jump on it! If they do showings, many times they’re only weekly, so you need to do research ahead of time.

Also, many parks offer “Movie in the Park” experiences during the summer, so again, check your local events calendar. For either of these, you can bring your own snacks, or a bottle of wine — sit back and enjoy the company!

5 Memorial Day Weekend Date Ideas

by Kristin Marshall on May 25, 2011

Memorial Day Summer is around the corner here in the Northern Hemisphere, and Memorial Day Weekend is the perfect time to heat things up with your sweetie. There’s so much going on, what should you do? If you’re short of date inspiration for this Memorial Day Weekend, here are 5 ideas to get you on the right page.

Go to a Memorial Event

It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people have forgotten the real reason behind Memorial Day! Honor our servicemen and women — almost everyone has a friend or is related to someone who has served. Many events are held outdoors, and are structured around barbecues and fairs.

The Great Outdoors

There are many outdoor happenings and activities you can do over the holiday weekend to spend time with your honey. Grab a few sandwiches, a bottle of wine and a blanket to have a beautiful picnic or go out by grabbing your camping gear. Sneak out at night to have a beach bonfire — in most places you’re not allowed, but it’s so worth it.

Go to a Drive-In Movie

They can be hard to come by, but these gems still exist! Pack your trunk full of blankets and treats and head to your local drive-in movie theater. Many will show double features for the price of one — new movies, too — so many times it’s a better deal than going to a cineplex. And you get a chance to snuggle under the stars.

Happy Earth Day! In honor of Mother Earth, we’ve gathered some fun, eco-friendly date ideas so you and your sweetie can do your part in going green.

The Great Outdoors

What better way to go green than to get in touch with nature? There are plenty of options for outdoor dates:

  • Go for a walk, whether it’s through your local farmer’s market, along the beach, or through the park.
  • Go picnicking at the park, beach, or other outdoor space. Be sure to pack your organic lunch in reusable containers!
  • Rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle boat to go spend a day on the water together.
  • Get dirty at your local community garden. These gardens are popping up all over the country, but if you don’t have one near you, why don’t you plant a garden of your own?
  • Attend an outdoor concert or event to take in some sun.

Massages

Not at a spa, but a massage from you! Massages at home don’t cost anything more than your time, love, and care — they can be quite the sensual experience. Try some fragrant organic massage oils to heighten the experience.

The Bubbly

No, not champagne, a bubble bath! Stay in and enjoy each other’s company by relaxing in a shared bubble bath. It’s romantic and stress-reducing.

Online Dating Trends

by Kristin Marshall on October 18, 2010

Online dating has become big business. Not only do revenues earned by dating sites continue to increase year after year, those sites have proven to be pretty decent at matchmaking. According to one study, in the year 2008 online dating sites were a factor in hooking up 120,000 couples who were married that year.

It’s no wonder that the Internet has impacted dating the way it has, considering how it has changed the way we watch TV, get our news, read books and, of course, shop. It’s the shopping part of online dating that tells the biggest tale. In the year 2007, online dating sites earned just over $1 billion in revenue. That number is expected to climb as high as $1.65 billion by the year 2012.

Today, online dating sites generate more revenue than, let’s say, online pornography. After digital music sites and video games such as MMORPGs, online dating sites are the third most popular type of paid sites on the Internet.

Take, for example, eHarmony. This site is one of the trend setters among online dating sites. The site has more than 20 million members, all of whom belly up to pay $50 for a monthly membership. As you can imagine, those revenues grow quite nicely.

Match.com doesn’t charge as much for their monthly memberships, coming in at around $30. That may be why they boast of almost 10 million more members than eHarmony. Here again, online dating is proving to be big business.

That money, or at least a good portion of it, goes right back into the marketplace via advertising revenues. In 2009, the online dating services spent around $350 million in advertising. Judging from the membership numbers at the top online dating sites, that money has proven to be a wise investment. It’s estimated that around 20 million people use at least one online dating site each month, suggesting that many consumers have memberships at multiple sites.

What’s truly interesting is the demographics that make up online dating sites. Right now, it’s estimated that around 60 percent of women and 50 percent use online dating sites, which explains the move by many newcomers into the online dating arena to market more heavily toward women, trying to capture that larger market share.

It’s hard to say with any certainty how online dating will change in the next few years, but there are two things you can be sure of: online dating isn’t going anywhere, and it’s going to continue to make some serious bank.

Dating on a Budget

by Kristin Marshall on October 7, 2010

Many people have been hit hard by this recession, and saving money is nothing to be ashamed of. Most folks think you have to spend a lot to impress your date, but the reality is you probably don’t. Of course you don’t want to appear cheap and you want to make sure your date feels important, but spending a lot of money isn’t the only way to achieve that.

Consider these ideas for dating on a budget:

  • Go out for ice cream instead of meeting for dinner. When you’re just meeting someone new through an online dating site or even if you’ve been seeing this person for a while, a simple ice cream outing can be a fun way to spend a date, and it doesn’t have to empty your wallet.
  • Go to the skating rink. Indoor and outdoor skating rinks offer a fun way to connect with your date regardless of the season. They also give you a special ingredient, nostalgia, which can make any date feel more special.
  • Make dinner for your date. If you have cooking skills, this is a great time to show them off. You’ll also be able to set a romantic mood and limit distractions at home, in addition to saving a few bucks.
  • Go for a hike. Many state, city, and national parks have ridiculously low admission fees and plenty of space for hiking. Take along a picnic lunch and spend some time in the great outdoors. You’ll probably learn a lot more about the other person than you could sitting in a movie theater, and the exercise will increase your focus, which could bring you two together.
  • Double dating can be a lot of fun, and doesn’t have to be expensive either. Invite another couple over for a night of cards or board games. Make an inexpensive but appetizing meal and ask them to bring a bottle of wine.
  • Check out a museum. There are so many different kinds of museums, and every state has its own specialties. The admission costs are generally low, and you can save even more money when you buy a year-long membership.

Spending money on a date is usually taken as a sign. It signals your financial stability and shows that you are willing to spend a little money to make sure your date has a good time. These days, however, reining in the spending a little isn’t likely to offend, since everyone knows that times are tough for most of us. Just be sure you are being attentive and showing that you care in other ways, and never show signs of being cheap.

Putting together plans for your first date is very important. Not only does it mean making a great first impression but also let’s your date know you have a creative side that will put them at ease on your date. You don’t want to appear careless or unorganized do you? Then plan a head and put a great date together. Here are 10 examples that will help you make the first date one of many more to come.

Take a craft class. While not everyone is crafty you can always make the attempt and it can be fun if you can both laugh at each other.
Are both of you physically fit? Take a yoga class.
Do you both love sports? How about a round of basketball or a few games at the bowling alley?
Looking for an easy place to have a good conversation? Check out the botanical gardens that are local to you.
Do you both share a passion for animals? Volunteer at your local animal shelter.

Go to the zoo. Not only is the zoo a fun date but it also opens up the conversations such as telling a story from when you were a child and visited the zoo or how you love the polar bears. There are also places to grab a bite to eat at the zoo.
Visit a carnival or local amusement park. These places can be fun but make sure your date likes to ride the rides before you plan for this one.

Check out a museum. If you are into art try the art museum. More of a science lover? Try the hands on science center.

What time of the year is it? If it’s spring time a nice stroll through the park with a picnic lunch will be great.

Summer time is great for a trip to the beach also with a picnic lunch. Fall is great for heading to the apple orchard to pick apples. Winter is a fun time for building a snowman, sledding or sitting by a warm fire.

Go putt-putt golfing. Everyone loves a good round of putt-putt. Many times you can find places that offer trampolines, go carts and batting cages to make it a fun date to remember.

The best way to plan a great first date that will not only be fun but also enjoyable to both you and your date is to spend a little time on the phone talking about each other’s interests. If you want to plan a first date that involved riding carnival rides bring it up and see if your date enjoys rides just as much as you do. If not it’s time to plan another date.

If you plan an outdoor date make sure you have a back-up plan just in case it rains or the weather just isn’t right. This way not only will be you prepared your date will be impressed that you planned ahead. Remember a good first date lays the foundation for more dates to come.
