Getting Ready to Date after Ending a Long Relationship

by Kristin Marshall on October 22, 2010

It’s not always easy to get back in the saddle after you’ve been in a relationship for a long time, but online dating is one of the best ways to do it. Before you get out there and start playing the game, however, there are some things you need to think about. You don’t want to waste a bunch of time and effort on failure, or on useless rebound relationships. If you’re ready to enter the online dating scene after ending a long relationship, here are some things you need to do first:

  • Get ready to commit. No, we’re not talking about another relationship commitment. Rather, we’re talking about being committed to dating. You need to be willing to do some research, and figure out what you’re really looking for from dating.
  • Figure out what you want. You need to decide what you hope to get from online dating. If you’re looking for another long-term relationship, that’s fine, but you need to identify it. If you’re just looking to meet some people and make new friends, that’s fine too. Your purpose in online dating will, to a large degree, determine your approach.
  • Polish your image. The tendency is for many folks to let their image slide a little bit when they’re in a long-term relationship. Chances are you’re at least a little behind on hairstyles and fashion trends, too. Get to the gym and drop those extra 10 pounds, get a new haircut and style, and get into good grooming habits. Consider expanding your wardrobe with some newer clothes, as well.
  • Avoid negative people. If you spend all of your time sitting around with bitter, jilted friends who have nothing good to say about relationships, you’re going to sabotage yourself. Instead, attend functions with singles.
  • Be realistic. Choose potential dates that you actually have a good chance of dating. If you’re looking to date a model, that’s fine, but realize that the models are also probably looking to date other models.
  • Be patient. It may take some time to get your “sea legs” back, but don’t worry. After a few weeks of online dating, you’ll find that it’s not all that different than it was before you were in your long term relationship.

Online Dating Trends

by Kristin Marshall on October 18, 2010

Online dating has become big business. Not only do revenues earned by dating sites continue to increase year after year, those sites have proven to be pretty decent at matchmaking. According to one study, in the year 2008 online dating sites were a factor in hooking up 120,000 couples who were married that year.

It’s no wonder that the Internet has impacted dating the way it has, considering how it has changed the way we watch TV, get our news, read books and, of course, shop. It’s the shopping part of online dating that tells the biggest tale. In the year 2007, online dating sites earned just over $1 billion in revenue. That number is expected to climb as high as $1.65 billion by the year 2012.

Today, online dating sites generate more revenue than, let’s say, online pornography. After digital music sites and video games such as MMORPGs, online dating sites are the third most popular type of paid sites on the Internet.

Take, for example, eHarmony. This site is one of the trend setters among online dating sites. The site has more than 20 million members, all of whom belly up to pay $50 for a monthly membership. As you can imagine, those revenues grow quite nicely.

Match.com doesn’t charge as much for their monthly memberships, coming in at around $30. That may be why they boast of almost 10 million more members than eHarmony. Here again, online dating is proving to be big business.

That money, or at least a good portion of it, goes right back into the marketplace via advertising revenues. In 2009, the online dating services spent around $350 million in advertising. Judging from the membership numbers at the top online dating sites, that money has proven to be a wise investment. It’s estimated that around 20 million people use at least one online dating site each month, suggesting that many consumers have memberships at multiple sites.

What’s truly interesting is the demographics that make up online dating sites. Right now, it’s estimated that around 60 percent of women and 50 percent use online dating sites, which explains the move by many newcomers into the online dating arena to market more heavily toward women, trying to capture that larger market share.

It’s hard to say with any certainty how online dating will change in the next few years, but there are two things you can be sure of: online dating isn’t going anywhere, and it’s going to continue to make some serious bank.

All right, let’s face it. If you’ve spent any amount of time in the online dating game, you’ve come across folks that are less than entirely honest about their situation. Men will tell you that they’re taller than what they really are, and women might embellish their size. The fact of the matter is that the truth can be a real turn-off when you’re trying to make in in online dating.

A recent study at Michigan State University suggests that about 90 percent of folks actually lie about something on their online dating profile. Men add an inch or three to their height, and women shave a few virtual pounds.

Now, these lies are usually little ones. We’re not talking about a guy who’s five feet tall claiming to be seven feet tall. We’re talking about the woman whose idea weight is 125 pounds, and she’s at 135 pounds, and she says she weighs 130.

You gotta get found

One of the reasons for this is that many online dating sites allow their users to search for prospective dates given specific height or weight requirements. By nudging the numbers a little bit in their favor, this may actually push them across some of those specific thresholds. This makes it more likely for their profile to turn up in search results on the online dating sites.

No one knows what they want until they find it

The problem is that many users of an online dating site might really not be entirely sure of what they actually like. The numbers can lie, just as much as a person can. For example, you might think that weight is an important issue, but once you get to meet the person in person that extra 10 pounds isn’t even noticeable, much less important.

Keepin’ it real

The key is to be as honest as you can in those areas that are detectable, and that can truly be noticed. If you absolutely hate golf and claim to love it, you’re going to get found out sooner rather than later.

One of the most interesting social trends that’s come out of the Information Age has been the advent of online dating. Online dating sites have allowed folks that are shy and might otherwise not become particularly active socially to make friends and even find that special guy or girl. Yet, online dating today is a lot different than it was in the old days (around 15 years ago).

A very old idea

The idea behind online dating – that folks can get to know one another without meeting face-to-face – is an old one. Snail mail romances from the days of the Tudors in England, for example, are legendary. You can make a case that Cyrano de Bergerac was even a pioneer in this regard. Getting to know the person on the inside before you get to know the outside has its place strongly in history.

Personals ads

In many ways, online dating sites are the continuation of the old newspaper classified personals ads. In fact, many of the earliest online dating implementations were little more than classified ads. You could place your own ad or respond to someone else’s ad via email.

The matchmaker

It wasn’t until much later that some entrepreneurial folks finally recognized that this online dating thing was here to stay, and that it could be capitalized upon. So, they set up websites that would not only show you other folks’ personal ads, but that would quiz you about your interests and personality and then pair you up with someone who they think is compatible. In many ways, it’s the matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof gone high-tech in the digital age.

A wide selection of choices

Today, there are literally dozens of popular online dating websites, and there are hundreds more that would love to compete with those. Finding the right one for you may depend on a number of factors, but the bottom line is that you’ve still got to be motivated if you’re going to have any success with those sites. Simple waiting and watching isn’t going to get you a date, much less a mate.
